"A GUSTO" CHAIR

If the chair has been thought of as a comfort object, why is my back in such pain after sitting on it for hours?

Maybe what we need is a chair to take a break from the other chair. Inspired by traditional wooden massage tools, this is the materialization of the dynamic and the analog-kinetic. This chair is designed to massage your upper back, but the wooden pieces can also be used as a de-stressing object as you move the tools along the curves.

"A GUSTITO" CHAIR

This chair is designed to massage your lower back, but the wooden pieces can also be used as a de-stressing object as you move the tools along the curves, such as an abacus.

COMUN STUDIO
(Co-Founder)

Founded in 2018 in Mexico City. Comun’s projects are based on daily life in Mexico and offer a commentary on the democratization of design. Looking for a link between human behavior and common shapes , the studio reinterprets everyday objects.

Research and concept development, technical drawings for production, project management, sales in design stores, social media and booth creation for design fairs and hosting

1) VAJILLA TOMASA

A tribute to the design of the tortilla. This is the materialization of the organic plate of Mexican people. Plate collection inspired by the colors, size and texture of the Mexican tortilla. Exhibited in Design Week Mexico 2019.

2) LA FREGADA ASHTRAY

La fregada references lavaderos (terrazzo washboard) which are found in every traditional house in Mexico City. Public lavadero stations served as social hubs where women gathered  to gossip. The ashtray serves a social function as well and La Fregada joins these two traditions.
BOLIGOMA

Boligoma is polymer and craft material, a Mexican variation of Silly Putty (1990s) This re-iteration of a foreign trend using local materials, sold on the street, outside traditional corporate consumer culture, represents a significant pattern in Mexican resourcefulness. I would like to bring attention to the clever and humble ingenuity of vernacular design in the streets of Mexico City, while creating an improved alternative to boligoma for design applications.

I set out to elevate boligoma as a design material, beginning with the 3D sculpture “Moss Study #1”, followed by the sound sculpture, “Sound Moss Sequence, exhibited at Material Art Fair Guadalajara 90210, Guadalajara.

Material research, craft technique development and piece production.

MOSS STUDY #1

Exploring the practice of biomimicry, moss study #1 references themes of transformation and decay. This corner installation consists of dyed boligoma pushed through mesh and stretched across a laser-cut wooden frame.

1) NGV TRIENNIAL - 2023

Conflict avocados interrogates the recent history of the avocado plant and the ramifications of its rapid increase in popularity. The global demand for the fruit, has altered the rate at which the plant is farmed, resulting in ecological destruction, violence and civil unrest. In the state of Michoacán, where the majority of the world’s avocados are grown for export, cartels take advantage of the lucrative trade in the fruit, engaging in illegal logging, violent land grabbing and intimidation to garner control of the profitable avocado industry.  -Friedman Benda

For this Triennial, a 40m textile was produced using natural dyes from avocado pits and marigold flowers. I co-illustrated the textile based on research into the organized crime surrounding the Mexican avocado industry. I supervised the production of the piece and managed a team of 15 women who drew, dyed and sewed the piece over 10 months.
For the Avocado Leather Cabinet, 660 squares of avocado veneers where made. I conducted research, material testing, prototyping and served as production assistant on the project.

Documentary: in order to show the link between the revolt and resistance of indigenous women and avocado industry packers against this environmental and sociopolitical issue, I coproduced a team of videographers, directors and the indeigenous activists themselves.
2) FL SOLO SHOW
2023

Fernando Laposse's exhibition ‘Ghosts of Our Towns’ at Friedman Benda's New York gallery, shedding light on the decline of biodiversity and rural life in Mexico. In this show, the designer focuses on three materials: corn, agave, and avocado, using them to tell a narrative of deteriorated environments and social abandonment. - Kat barandy I designboom

For the solo show, I worked as a production assistant and production supervisor. I also was in charge of shipping logistics and direct communication with the gallery.

3) POLLINATION DANCE / PERRIER JOUET COLLABORATION
2023

The installation showcases a flower's role in pollination  which is a celebration of life defined by harmonious interactions between different species. The structure is made up of various 3D-printed in eco-resin and silk fabrics natural dyed with the cochineal insect and marigold flowers.
-Dezeen

For this 2-year project, I developed design proposals and prototypes. I also served as production supervisor, production assistant, project manager and shipping coordinator. The installation was presented in DesignArt Tokyo and Design Miami 2023 where I installed and hosted the project on site. Lastly, I made the graphic design for the packaging of the champagne bottles.
